The 1753 site where Moravian settlers first put down roots in North Carolina – with walking trails, gardens and wetlands.
Long before Old Salem, a small group of Moravian settlers built Bethabara – the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina. Today the site is a quiet park on the north side of Winston-Salem with reconstructed palisade walls, archaeological foundations, colonial-style gardens and a small visitor centre.
Why we like it
It is one of the easiest places in town to get outdoors. Miles of wooded greenway and boardwalk trails loop through the Bethabara wetlands, which are a favourite of local birdwatchers. It is flat, shaded and friendly for kids and dogs on a leash.
Good to know
- The grounds and trails are free to explore.
- Pair it with a picnic – there are tables near the parking area.
- Plan about 1–2 hours.
